I entered the Ether yoga room at Hanuman Festival for Sianna Sherman’s class: Mantra, Mudra & Meditation, with deep hip openers, as thunder boomed outside. The room was adorned in colorful cloth, beautiful light, and a large painting of a dove, with Chakras, flying into the heavens.
Sianna introduced the Tantric Path as one of integration of consciousness. We took the stance of the archer, with our bow and arrow, as we imagined shooting our target out into our future, aiming for our deepest heart’s desires, awakening our yearning and directing our energies, steadfast, towards our dreams.
Sianna said, “This is the arrow of your heart.”
Tantra is full of techniques that help us grow. “Tan” means that which stretches, and “Tra” means, tool. In essence, Tantra is, “tools to help us stretch.” Sianna explained that there are two faces of Tantra, that which expands, and that which binds.
She said a beautiful invocation, “How do I build a trust bubble so strong to grow inside of that, no matter what, I am used for my highest destiny: activated, open, in heart alignment, with pure motive to be used as a vessel for the divine. Please, let me surrender my outer agenda and welcome it all.”
We proceeded to flow through a sun salutation, building trust in the flow of the mystery, and especially, said Sianna, “build trust in what we can’t understand.”
As we built our energy, flowing together in unison, word came that another yoga class was rained out and needed to join us in our flow. We had to move, make room.
My mind took over, and began to wonder: How will we all fit? Will this interrupt the flow? Should this be happening?
The irony was not lost on me, that in the midst of my being moved by letting go of the sequence of events outside of my control, the sequence of events unfolded in unpredictable ways, and my monkey mind resisted.
Soon, another class was rained out, and we made room for a hundred more people. There we were, packed in to a room, close to 300 of us, joining together, surrendering to the sequence of events outside of our control.
It seemed so perfect! Perhaps the desires of our hearts are to join in celebration together, in the great letting go that is life, and by allowing our hearts to be drawn by what we love, which apparently, is being together, in surrender and flow, worshipping at the altar of love.
We sang a chant in unison, “All that I am- I offer at the altar of love…in sweet surrender.”
Tears streamed down my face as we chanted, and I was reminded again of the bliss of receiving the grace of Love and surrender, trusting that I am held, in every moment.
Sometimes, when I am practicing yoga, or teaching classes, I forget to bring the spirit of devotion, of deep mystery, into my practice. I can attempt to perfect certain postures, or find the right alignment, and forget altogether that the true point of my practice is to awaken my loving heart, and embody devotion, surrendering all that I am, and trusting in the flow. Though I learned many new ways to get into certain postures, and ways to open my hips, the most meaningful moments were when I was brought back to the point of yoga, the union available when we remember that the point is to practice the art of loving devotion.
May you stretch, and grow, and offer all that you are upon the altar of love. Follow the arrow of your heart. Remember that you are always held even when the sequence of events in your life unfold in ways that you don’t understand.
