Don’t miss it San Francisco Yogis: Tuesday night, January 22nd at 8pm, San Francisco Public Radio, 88.5 will rebroadcast the January 9th, San Francisco City Arts and Lecture, “The Science of Yoga.” This mindful, and engaging discussion between Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction founder, Jon Kabat-Zinn and Yoga Instructor/Stanford Health Psychologist, Kelly Mcgonigal must be listened to live on the radio. City Arts and Lectures disappear like Tibetan sand mandalas after rebroadcast and are never archived online.
Kabat-Zinn began the evening with a mindfulness exercise, telling the audience to bring attention and awareness to the right hand and then various other body parts. According to him, this type of practice uses a different part of the brain than the part that tells “stories,” Kabat-Zinn characterizes mindfulness, as “paying attention in a particular way, in the present moment, on purpose, and non-judgmentally.” When we use the part of our brain that senses and feels the body without judgement, we may be able to reduce stress and increase happiness.
Kabat-Zinn spoke in careful sentences that were broken by Mcgonigal skillful, provocative questions. She wondered what Kabat-Zinn thought of the love hate relationship the United States has with mindfulness?” illustrating her query with two news stories that had appeared in the media the previous week. One article described a study that found when the word Zen was used in New York real estate ads, properties were able to command a higher price. Another was a Fox news story describing the wussification of the American male, who seems to be moving away from competitive sports, towards yoga and mindfulness. Listen this week on FM 88.5 Tuesday at 8pm or Wednesday morning, 2am.
