In the last 15 years, Yoga Tree has expanded to eight additional locations. The second location to open was in the Castro. While the Stanyan studio is small and cozy, the Castro studio is large and airy, with walls of windows and lofted ceilings – that’s because it’s converted from a World War II ballroom. Most of the classes are Vinyasa and flow. The Castro studio has hosted it all – yoga and chant and kirtan, dance parties and record releases and celebrations, pumas, prayers, vigils, rituals, trainings, graduations, meditations, workshops of every flavor, releases of every form and intention. The room pulses and breathes. The air is sort of electric.
The Hayes Studio followed, which is cozy like the Stanyan studio but has skylights, giving the small space an airy feel and a beautiful mural.Few people know about the Mission Studio on Shotwell at 14th, which opened in 2010. That’s because it only hosts one public, donation-based class per day. The rest of the time it’s devoted to teacher trainings and workshops (and the Yoga Tree business office). It was my home for the four weeks of my Yoga Teacher Training. The warm and inviting studio is energized by the beautiful yantras, statues and crystals that surround the space. There is also a back room for rest and relaxation, and a sunny deck where lunch can be enjoyed during long training days.
The Potrero Studio opened last fall and has a large (used for public classes, teacher trainings, workshops, and events) and small studio, which is devoted to regular classes as well as therapeutics and other specialized classes like Yoga for Cancer Patients, Wall Ropes and Treveni – which is a meditation and yoga philosophy class. I love spaces like the back room at Potrero. For the same price as a regular yoga class, it’s like being in a workshop because you get so much attention from the teacher with the cozy space.
