Yoga 101 Class

In this special class, we will explore some of the basic postures, breathing, and meditation techniques that make up the practice of Hatha yoga. Students will leave with a basic understanding of proper alignment and technique and will be prepared for most beginner and all level classes.

Yoga is appropriate for just about anyone. You don’t need to be flexible or be able to quiet the mind. You simply need the desire to show up and do your best. This is perfect for people new to the practice of yoga as well as for more seasoned students who want to review the basics.

Teacher Bio

Yvonne Kingsley is passionate about living and sharing the path of yoga. She invites students to tune in to their internal experience, using movement and breath to cultivate an open body and calm mind. Her classes are grounded and intentional, incorporating rhythmic flow, attention to alignment, and intelligent sequencing that weaves together strength, flexibility, and balance. She encourages students to bring greater awareness, curiosity, and compassion into their practice.

Student Tips!

  1. Visit yogatreesf.com. Access our current class schedule, read class descriptions, purchase class passes, and sign up for classes and workshops.
  2. Arrive 10-15 minutes early. Always check in at the front desk – even if you’ve made an online reservation. Use a scan card for quick sign in.
  3. Practice on an empty stomach. Do not eat 2-3 hours prior to yoga practice. Juice or fruit are OK if you need quick energy before class. Drink plenty of water prior to class, but avoid drinking during class.
  4. Dress appropriately. Wear comfortable, form-fitting workout clothing. Layers help to adjust for temperature changes during and after class.
  5. Purchase a yoga mat. Having your own mat supports your commitment to your practice and ensures its cleanliness. Mats and towels can be rented for $1.
  6. Remove your shoes before entering the studio. Leave your shoes in a cubby in the studio lobby. This preserves the sacred nature of the studio space. We recommend taking your valuables inside the studio.
  7. Turn off your cell phone. This enhances your experience and is a polite gesture to your fellow students.
  8. Go to level 1-2 or all levels classes. Level 1-2 and all-level classes are appropriate for beginners. We also recommend Yoga 101, a workshop designed just for beginners. Let the teacher know you are new to the practice.
  9. Notify the teacher of injuries or medical conditions. This helps the teacher know how to assist you and give you modifications.
  10. Practice often. 4-6 times per week for maximum benefit. 2-3 times per week will show improvement for most students within three months.
  11. Support Your Practice. By allowing yourself to experience a Private yoga lesson. Spend an hour with an expert teacher and have them cater the practice to fit your needs. Take these tips into a group class so you can flow like the rest of them!
  12. And a little extra... love to the body never hurt anyone! Balance a great yoga class by following up with a therapeutic, relaxing massage– treat yourself to an ‘urban vacation’.
