I WANT CHOCOLATE! SWEETS! BREAD! CEREAL! ETC… Cravings. They are our greatest delight and worst enemy.
Sometimes it seems like you have no control over them. The last you remember you were walking down the street when a feeling came over you for something bready. Next a thought must have croissant. Now here you are sitting at the café, crumbs on the table and a sweet taste in your mouth.
What happened? The craving won.
Yet you are also left with a feeling of disappointment because you really want to stop eating food that doesn’t serve you. Right? That’s why today I want to teach you a mantra. It goes like this: “Breathe, Relax, Feel, Watch and Allow.”It’s the five steps to riding the wave of sensation that comes from Kripalu yoga. I use it as one of the foundational teachings in my FOOD FREEDOM programs and yoga classes. You can take these 5 words anywhere and they are helpful for riding out things like:Sensations, Cravings, Feelings, Stories & Hormonal changes.
When we learn to ride this wave we move out of confusion and towards truth.
Too many of us act on impulse.
I am sure you have experienced this is meditation. As a beginner you may have noticed that after awhile of sitting you feel a twinge in your left knee. You start to twitch, move around and even stand up. At this time in your practice you do not have the ability to stay with sensation and watch it. Nothing wrong with that and no judgment. But as you become a more seasoned meditator you start to notice you stay with sensations longer and longer. Even to the point of watching it go away with out even moving a muscle,
The same goes for a food craving. Clients often ask me, well isn’t that my intuition. No, its usually not. It’s an impulse. And with cravings it seems that our need to fill it and fast is part of our culture.
What if for just one time you were able to be with your craving. BREATHE through it. RELAX. Notice the edge that comes up? Does the feeling in your body intensify? Are you having thoughts? If so what is the nature of these thoughts? Can you FEEL what is present? Physical sensations? Emotions? Do memories come up? Can you WATCH all that passes through you? And can you trust the natural unfolding and ALLOW what ever needs to come next to appear in its own time? That life itself is moving inside you and at this point the craving is how it is manifesting.
This is my invitation for you over the next month.
Ride the wave of craving.
And let me know what happens….
