Want to be the possibility of Health?
By Food Freedom Mentor and Yoga Teacher Darshana Weill
A few years ago I spent the week in Mexico with my family. On our very first night at the dinner table my Dad says “OK, no diets this week”. We all laughed, fantasizing about the rich and delicious Mexican cuisine that surrounded us.
And then, I was struck by this thought: Why do we accept that our only choices are to either diet or overeat?
As a Food Freedom Coach, I meet many people who are in a constant battle with this dilemma; Am I on a diet or can I indulge?
In my personal experience, the minute I promised myself that my diet would start on Monday (that’s when they all start, right?), I’d immediately forget about eating well in the present moment. This would lead to overindulging and overeating. The knowledge that I was presumptively going on a diet, gave me this strange permission to eat more NOW.
I sit with clients every day who ask me about portion control
“Tell me how much to eat Darshana.”
”What is a serving size?”
“How much is too much?”
These are all great questions, but don’t these questions get kind of boring and stale? Let’s look at a fresh way to learn how to end the seesaw of overeating vs. the dieting world.
As I sat listening to the laughter at the table and all the foods everyone started to describe they were going to indulge in during our holiday week another thought occurred to me…”who do I want to be?”
It reminded me of Gandhi’s quote, “Be the Change You Wish to See In the World.”
Do I want to be someone who uses holidays, birthdays, events as an excuse to overeat? Or do I want to be the woman on vacation that gets up and does yoga as the sun rises, eats fresh local food, in just the right amount so that putting on my bathing suit every day is a joy as I run down the beach and enjoy the sparkling blue warm water? Do I want to celebrate my friends and family with the energy, vibrancy, attention and health or feel sluggish and distracted by food thoughts, a bloating stomach or the mental anguish of abusive food and body thoughts?
Well the answer seemed obvious.
I wanted to be the possibility of health, energy and wellness so therefore I want my actions to be in alignment with my possibility,
Now you might be saying, well of course Darshana, that’s why I go on a diet. But diets are full of restrictions, rules and a feeling of confinement.
Did you notice that instead of making a statement about what I want to be I use the word possibility?
When you add the word possibility to being a change you wish to see you are stepping into this new way of being with out pressure.
You get to ask yourself every morning, afternoon and evening what would a person who was the possibility of health eat now?
What would a person with the possibility of energy reach for in the mid afternoon? A veggie juice? A nap? Or a candy bar?
Maybe you would reach for a candy bar. But if you did and you were practicing being the possibility of health you would eat your candy bar with awareness.
Your possibilities can be endless when it comes to health.
Can you think of a few now?
Can you feel the opening that happens when you phrase it like this?
The world of eating well cannot be a stagnate thing; it has to be seen as a moving object in your life. Why? Because you are constantly changing and so are you needs, especially your nourishment needs. If you try to just be healthy and trying to replicate day in and day out the same routine then you will be trapped in the cycle of either being on a rigid diet or acting with no boundaries at all.
Being the possibility of health leaves you with flexibility, variety and a chance to play with your relationship to food.
It is your yoga practice. Just as you set an intention in the beginning of class you are creating a possibility each day for yourself for health. And you can choose wisely how your efforts and action help create a bigger ripple effect on how you can help the world become something you vision.
