Last October, I went on a yoga retreat with Niav Connor and Yoga Tree teacher Ariel Howland in Haramara Resort in Sayulita, Mexico. One of the wonderful things about staying at Haramara is that the only electricity is in the kitchen. Staying in little cabanas without electricity, you’re able to completely unplug, listening to the ocean at night.
To light the rooms at night and early morning, the cabanas are equipped with gas lamps and candles. I fell in love with starting and ending my day by candlelight. There is something so peaceful, sacred, and purposeful about using natural light instead of electricity.
Now, when I’m craving that sense of calm and intention, I light a candle when I rise and go about my morning by candlelight until the sun comes up. My favorite morning routine is roll out my yoga mat and practice by candlelight, welcoming the dawn. It fills me with love and inspiration for the day ahead. I have the best days when I do this.
Give it a try – starting your gently has a profound effect on how you feel the rest of the day. I can’t describe how special candlelit mornings are… you have to experience it for yourself.
