Are you traveling this holiday season? Will you be exposed to a change in your routine? Environment? Foods? People?
Even if you are staying put during the holiday you probably feel the whirlwind of energy around you. People are gathering, presents are being given and more and more food is being cooked.
It’s easy to roll up a yoga mat and take it on the road with you. It’s one of the benefits of being a yogi. All you need is a mat, or not, and you can drop down into downward dog, shoot your legs up for a headstand or open up your heart in urdhva dhanurasana.
Yoga asana is an excellent vehicle for transformation. One I wouldn’t trade for the world. And yet there is something I find at the heart of our yoga practice, the invitation to cultivate loving kindness in everything we do.
Jon Kabat Zinn explains this perfectly in the title of his book Wherever You Go There You Are.
No matter where we go, for the holidays or anytime, we take our whole selves with us.
And as a practice of learning to love, accept and be kind we must look at the ‘attitude’ we come towards life with. Our histories, health, circumstances and situations are often the defining factors how we see the world. Being a yogi invites us to cultivate a presence and a heart that is open.
Many of us have been trained to be mean to ourselves and create rules especially when it comes to food. You probably know your judger extremely well. So much so that you think your judger is YOU.
I have found that being cruel, rules, and listening to the “shoulds” don’t work. They leave us feeling depleted and deprived. They are also a set up for failure. YOU have the chance to change that, any time you like.
In Jon Kabat Zinn’s book, The Full Catastrophe he outlines a set of attitudes. I find this list extremely helpful in learning to cultivate a more loving attitude towards our selves and particularly our relationship to food. This practice of learning loving-kindness is called a metta practice.
During the holidays I invite you to pick one of the words below as a theme to support you in finding a new approach and mindset when it comes to food and life. And the great thing is you can take this with you to grandmas, a foreign country, the dinner table and your yoga mat.
NON JUDGING – impartial witnessing, observing the present, moment without evaluation, and categorizing
PATIENCE – allowing things to unfold in their time
BEGINNER’S MIND – not taking the ordinary for granted
TRUST – trusting oneself, ones body, ones intuition, and ones emotions as well as trusting that life is unfolding the only way it can
NON-STRIVING – not goal oriented, remaining unattached to outcome or achievement, not forcing things
ACCEPTANCE – acknowledging things as they actually are; does not mean passivity but rather an understanding of the present so one can respond more effectively
LETTING GO – not holding on to thoughts, feelings, experience. Integrating ones history and coming in to present time
GRATITUDE – the quality of reverence, appreciating and being thankful
