After learning more about what mantra is, I started exploring how different people use mantra.
First, I spoke with Yoga Tree Teacher Ericka Montana.
“I find that mantra helps me to center my mind and allows the koshas (layers of the auric field) to expand. The resulting space affords an increase in vibration, and a washing of the chakras. For me this is extremely healing, and soothes my soul like a sunny spring day.
As a full time yoga teacher I chant Aum at least six to nine times aloud per day. It is easily my favorite mantra – it means Yes! It is the opening into the spirit world, activation of the Ajna (sixth) chakra, invoking the third eye seat. It is also thought to be the sound which holds up the entire universe.
Each time we say it we are contributing to the vibrational frequency that charges humanity with love and light?! How profound is that?
Right now my favorite tune is a chant to Ram. This has a very cleansing affect on the Manipura (third) chakra, often called “the city of jewels”. The sound of Raaaaaa(m) cleanses the karmic dust or “jewels” from the core, leaving me calm and clear.
I used to practice japa – chanting mantra silently 108 times using my prayer bead mala as a counter. But after years of exposure to the sacred sounds I have a new relationship to them. I can just sit and think of them and immediately attune to their affects. I find that coupling them with mudra (hand jestures) the duo takes me beyond maya (the illusions of life). It is my preferred practice of reverence these days.”
Stay tuned for more on mantra in this ongoing series with Martine Holston.
Martine Holston believes the world needs visionaries – they propel our evolution. As a Vision Cartographer (and consultant to visionaries), she’s been featured on The Daily Love, Tiny Buddha, Mind Body Green, Live in the Grey, and Brazen Careerist.
When she’s not creating strategy maps for visionaries, Martine is zipping up and down the California coast running through vineyards, hiking through forests, and doing yoga on the beach.
