How has Yoga Tree impacted your life?

"Yoga Tree has been and is an integral part of my yoga /meditation journey. I have studied there for many years with Dina Amsterdam and several other teachers over the years. Then in 2012 I decided to do the teacher training at Yoga Tree. I have my 500 RYT and 300-hour InnerYoga certification. "

How has Yoga Tree impacted your life?

"Yoga Tree has impacted my life in so many different ways. When I first moved to San Francisco 8 years ago, I barely knew anyone in the City, inside or outside the yoga studio. I found the most amazing, heart-filled community in Janet Stone's class, where I felt so welcomed. Many years later, Yoga Tree helped me through another great transition: motherhood! "

"A fun fact about me: I'm married to Yoga Tree instructor Jason Gillenwater. We have been married for 12 years and have two little boys."

How has Yoga Tree impacted your life?

"It has given me a familiar and sacred space. One I know is always there for me - free of judgement or any expectations. It has provided a sense of community. I met several friends on the mat that became friends off the mat. Sage advice from a teacher I have practiced with for many year has been a huge gift."

What makes Yoga Tree vs other local studios your home of practice?

Albert: "The excellent teachers create an inviting learning environment to progress my practice."

Who has inspired your yoga practice the most?

Lily: "Ariel Howland was the 1st teacher that incorporated yoga with life, life with yoga – she helped my yoga practice improve me physically, mentally and spiritually."

How long have you been practicing with Yoga Tree?

"Yoga Tree will forever hold a special place in my heart. As a first year elementary school teacher, I needed a space to reconnect with myself. About 8 years ago now, I stepped into my first yoga class and it was at Yoga Tree. Since then, I've loved finding my yoga home at both the 6th Ave and Stanyan locations and have found an amazing community of yogis and teachers. "

Who has inspired your yoga practice the most?

"A few summers ago, I stumbled upon Sarah Ezrin's class at Yoga Tree 6th Ave. I remember leaving her class feeling inspired. She has the ability to connect with her students, to create thoughtful sequences that allow you to find a sense of flow with your body and breath, to play amazing music, and most importantly to encourage students to play. Sarah has been my teacher and mentor for both the 200 and 300 hour teacher trainings and I am so grateful. "

What does the 20 Year Anniversary mean to you?

"It's amazing. I am currently in recovery from a severe brain injury. I've mostly been in a healing cocoon for the last 2 years. I've missed teaching. And the break from being "The Teacher" has been such a rich and beautiful evolutionary journey for me. The last 2 years have been the hardest and most spiritually transformational years of my life. It is beautiful to look back... to gain perspective... from the vantage point of this 20 year journey with Yoga Tree."

What do you love most about the Yoga Tree community?

"I love the diversity of the Yoga Tree community. My classes are full of people from all walks of life, all ages and life stages, all ethnicities. My Gentle Hatha classes are full of the wisdom of many seniors, while my Prenatal classes are populated by women from around the world."

Why do you teach at Yoga Tree/what makes it your home?

"Yoga Tree Valencia has always been my home studio. I’ve taught at all the other Yoga Trees but Valencia is true my home. Over the years, many thousands of mamas have practice yoga with me in this studio. We have laughed and cried as we have shared honest, personal, celebratory as well as sorrowful moments. It is truly hallowed ground. When tears fall from a mama’s eyes in class, I remind her she is not alone. "

Share a fun fact about you!

"I have an identical twin who is also a yoga teacher. She was a farmer and I was a midwife, salt of the earth kind of women! Now, we both teach yoga!"

What do you believe Yoga Tree has brought to the Bay Area Yoga community?

"Yoga Tree has helped bring balance to San Francisco and the Bay Area over the last 20 years. The city’s growth has been explosive, and Yoga Tree has been a steadying force. Our studios offer a refuge for students and the practice itself helps them to navigate the ups and downs of an increasingly fast-paced life."

How long have you been with Yoga Tree?

"I began practicing at Yoga Tree in 2001 and fell in love the with the practice and the community. I completed a 200 Hr Teacher Training in 2006 and began teaching at Yoga Tree and have been with them ever since."

Why do you teach at Yoga Tree/what makes it your home?

"Yoga Tree’s primary magic, to me, lies in each studio’s unique character, our local-ish vibe and our blessed lack of slick corporate groupthink, both in studio design and teaching styles. Which is to say: We have always de-emphasized the often bland, spa-like effluvia and cookie-cutter “power hour” workout classes favored by many gyms and megachains, and instead revolve around more independent teaching voices, styles, angles of approach. "

What do you love most about the Yoga Tree community?

"You walk in the door at Yoga Tree and feel it instantly: Diversity, vibrancy, creativity, HEART. I love that Yoga Tree is a "home grown" studio and supports local causes and charities. We're at one with the community, and that's really the yogic way."

What does the 20 Year Anniversary mean to you?

"Yogis naturally have a deep respect for lineage, for tradition. Our 20th Anniversary marks a milestone in the lineage that is Yoga Tree, and reaffirms the vision behind what we do and how we serve."
